About
Dr. Nireeja Pradhan, Consultant Psychiatrist and Expert Witness
I am a Consultant Psychiatrist with over 23 years’ NHS consultant experience in Birmingham and a substantial medico-legal practice serving solicitors across the UK. I provide independent psychiatric expert evidence in civil, criminal, family, employment, immigration, tribunal and capacity-related matters, with reports that are clear, balanced and legally useful.
I provide solicitor-focused psychiatric evidence grounded in long-standing clinical practice
I am FRCPsych, GMC registered and Section 12(2) approved, with an MA in Medical Ethics & Law. My medico-legal work is built on the same clinical discipline that underpins my NHS consultant role: careful assessment, proper review of records, clear reasoning and conclusions that address the real issues in dispute.
I am instructed by claimant and defendant solicitors, and I am dual-accredited for both. I am also regularly appointed as a Single Joint Expert, and my evidence has been commended by judges for clarity. For solicitors, that matters because a report must do more than identify diagnosis. It must explain causation, prognosis, capacity, risk, functional impact and areas of uncertainty in a way the court can use.
My practice covers personal injury, clinical negligence, criminal law, employment law, family proceedings, immigration and asylum, prison law, wills and probate, public law, housing, mental health tribunal and fitness to practise matters. I also maintain links with experts across psychiatry, psychology, orthopaedics, neurology and other disciplines where your case requires broader input.
My medico-legal practice is built on clinical credibility, legal focus and dependable service
Solicitors usually need four things quickly: the right psychiatric expertise, a realistic turnaround, fixed fees and evidence that will stand up to scrutiny. My practice is structured around those priorities.
Consultant-level experience
I have worked as an NHS Consultant Psychiatrist in Birmingham since 2003. That depth of practice informs my approach to diagnosis, treatment history, risk, capacity, prognosis and functional impact.
Court-ready opinion
My reports address the questions that matter in litigation, including causation, apportionment, prognosis and consistency with the records. I write clearly and directly so your case can progress without avoidable ambiguity.
Recognised credibility
I am an APIL Tier 1 Recommended Expert, an Expert Witness Awards winner in 2017 and 2019, and a regular SJE. Judges have commended my evidence for clarity.
Practical solicitor service
I offer fixed fees with no hidden charges, flexible and deferred payment terms where appropriate, and a free initial medico-legal screening call. I respond with the needs of your deadline and your case strategy in mind.
My career combines clinical leadership with sustained expert witness practice
Strong psychiatric evidence comes from more than report writing. It comes from years of clinical judgement, multidisciplinary decision-making and a clear understanding of how psychiatric opinion translates into legal relevance.
NHS Consultant Psychiatrist
I began my consultant role in Birmingham in 2003, developing extensive experience in adult mental health assessment, diagnosis and treatment.
Expansion of expert witness work
I developed a substantial medico-legal practice across civil, criminal, family and tribunal matters, including complex and sensitive instructions.
Professional and legal recognition
My work has been recognised through APIL recommendation, repeated SJE appointments, judicial commendation for clarity, and Expert Witness Awards wins in 2017 and 2019.
Nationwide instructions
I continue to accept instructions from solicitors across the UK, with assessments nationwide and access to a broader expert network where multi-disciplinary evidence is required.
How I approach medico-legal psychiatric work
I approach every instruction with independence, discipline and close attention to the issues set out in your letter of instruction. My role is not to advocate for either side. My role is to assess the evidence properly, identify the psychiatric issues that genuinely arise, and give an opinion that is clinically sound and useful to the court or tribunal.
Where the evidence supports a clear conclusion, I say so. Where there are limitations, competing explanations or diagnostic uncertainty, I explain that directly. Solicitors instruct me because they need psychiatric evidence that is balanced, reasoned and proportionate, not overstated.
I also understand the practical pressures behind every instruction. Your case may involve a tight hearing date, incomplete records, funding constraints or a vulnerable client. My aim is to make the process efficient from the outset, starting with a free medico-legal screening call and a clear route to instruction.
- Independence of opinion
